A Timeline of Us

2001

First Sight

September 8, 2001 — The snack line

Isaac was standing in the snack line when the most beautiful girl he had ever seen walked up to her friend just ahead of him. She was wearing a red jean suit with patent leather Reebok Classics, hair pulled back into a bun with curled bangs falling across her forehead. She was slipping her friend money so she could skip the line and still get her chocolate crunch ice cream bar. It didn't matter that she was bending the rules — Isaac was completely love struck. In that moment, standing in a snack line, he asked God to make that girl his wife. He spent the entire wait pleading, bargaining, and begging. It was as if the whole universe collapsed down to three: God, Kyla, and Isaac.

Chemistry class, mixtapes, and a very important question

In January, Isaac landed a teacher's assistant spot in Miss Rimbech's chemistry class — and Kyla was in that class. His first move was asking his friend John Tory to get her number. Kyla's answer: "tell him to ask me himself." So when the class did a lab, Isaac made sure to give her setup extra attention. It was a double period, and afterwards Kyla sat in an office chair in the back of class spinning and talking with a friend. She mentioned she was tired of spinning, so Isaac offered to keep it going. They talked the whole time. Kyla teased him — either he was really nice or he liked her, because no one spins a chair that long for nothing. He offered to make her a mixtape with every song she asked for. He went home that night and spent hours downloading every track so he could hand it to her the next day. They exchanged numbers and became friends. She'd call whenever she or a friend wanted a fresh tape. Not long after, Isaac slipped her a note: "Do you like me? Circle yes or no." She circled No — and wrote that she had a boyfriend. He kept trying. April came, after spring break, and he asked again. No again. Then in early May, Kyla somehow let him know he should ask once more. He asked the very next day. This time she said, "Let me think about it." A day or two passed — the longest days of his life. And then — she said yes.
